Obituary for Mary Poppleton

Mary Elizabeth Case Poppleton was born on June 6, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Edwin Thomas Case and Dorothy Laura Sessions Case. Mary peacefully passed away on January 22, 2024 surrounded by her husband and children.

Mary was the second of five children. She was loved by all who knew her. Growing up in Bountiful, Utah she was always surrounded by friends. She spoke fondly of them and had so many wonderful memories she loved to share with her family. She attended Bountiful High School and graduated in 1967. She then moved to Logan, Utah. While attending Utah State University she met and married her eternal companion Gary Stennett Poppleton. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 7, 1970.

Gary and Mary are the proud parents of 7 children. Mary happily followed Gary as they moved throughout the United States and Korea during his Military career until they settled in Logan, Utah where they raised their children.

Mary was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in many callings throughout her life and loved the many friends she made as she served. She was a great example to her family of doing the things she was asked cheerfully and willingly. She had a great love for her Heavenly Father and her Savior Jesus Christ. She was always eager to share her testimony any chance she got.

She cherished the time she and Gary served in the Logan, Utah and Orlando, Florida Temples. Serving a full time mission in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Mission was a highlight in their marriage and a great blessing for them and their family.

Mary loved cooking and collecting cookbooks and recipes. If there was a kitchen gadget, she had to have it and would learn to use it. At home she could always be found in the kitchen. When she wasn’t cooking she was cross stitching or crocheting. Mary was always creating something.

Mary and Gary were devoted Utahns until they had a chance to move to Florida and spend their retirement years living with their daughter, Jill, and her family. They quickly adapted to becoming Floridians and found many wonderful friends in their new Ward. They have enjoyed living in the Sunshine State and getting to spend time at the beach.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She cherished those callings the most. Her family is forever grateful to know she is theirs for eternity. Mary was preceded by her parents; her mother and father in law, Donna and Gib Poppleton; her brothers Leland and Ted Case; her son-in-law, McAllister (Cal) Gentry; and two of her children, Brent and Brenda Poppleton; along with many other beloved family members and friends who were able to greet her in her Heavenly home.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Stennett Poppleton; five of her children: Lori (Curtis) Poole of Woods Cross, Utah; Scott (Angie) Poppleton of St. George, Utah; Jill (David) Velez of Longwood, Florida; Lisa Gentry of Edmund, Oklahoma; and Christina Poppleton of Logan, Utah. Brother, Brent (Wanda) Case of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and sister, Cindy (David) Hansen of Orem, Utah. 10 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Mary was so loved and will be greatly missed.
