Obituary for Mery Arias
Mery Arias Valencia, 74, of Davenport, Florida, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2021, in Celebration, Florida.
Mery was born on June 18, 1946, in Pereira, Colombia, the daughter of JoaquÃn ElÃas Arias and Marta Lina Valencia. She attended secondary school in Pereira, was married in 1962 to Gilmer de Jesús Osorio, and from this union they were blessed with two daughters, Susana and Meribel, and two sons, JoaquÃn and Gilmer. Later Mery and Gilmer were divorced, but she was blessed to find love again with her soul-mate, José Hernando Arias, who held her in his arms in the last moments of her life after their 25 years together.
Mery was a seamstress and her favorite activity was working in her sewing room at home while listening to inspirational cassettes from Jehovah's Witnesses, as she was a member of Spanish-speaking congregations in New York and Florida. Mery was also a wonderful cook, and was well-known in her community for the Colombian empanadas and tamales she would prepare and share generously. Just a month and a half before her unexpected death, she was playing beach-ball toss in a pool with one of her granddaughters who was visiting her from California. Mery loved conversation and always has had a happy and playful spirit. She made friends anywhere she went.
In her life, she lived and worked in Pereira, Colombia; Caracas, Venezuela; The Bronx, New York; and, for the past 19 years, in the Orlando suburb of Davenport. She was a proud citizen of the United States of America and also a proud citizen of the Republic of Colombia.
Mery is survived by her mother in Pereira, Colombia; seven sisters, Lucy, Dora, Nelfi, Janet, Marta, and Aleida, all of Pereira, Amparo, of Cali, Colombia, and a brother, Fulvio, of Pereira. Mery Arias is also survived by her four loving children, MarÃa Susana RamÃrez and husband, of Elmwood Park, New Jersey; JoaquÃn Emilio Osorio and wife, of Valley Stream, New York; Meribel Osorio and husband, of Hays, Kansas; and Gilmer de Jesús Osorio and wife, of Kissimmee, Florida. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Cremation has been selected by the family. A memorial service is planned to be held in Pereira, Colombia.
